A few important events in its history would include the invasion of the Muslim Arabs in 711. They ruled southern Spain and built many beautiful palaces such as the Alhambra in Granada. In 1492, when Spain was united by the marriage of Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand, the Spanish armies were able to defeat the Arabs in Granada. In that same year, America was claimed as a Spanish colony. This resulted in a time of great wealth and exploration for Spain. Another important date in Spanish history would be the defeat of the Spanish Armada, or fleet of war ships, by the English. This happened in 1588 under the forces of Queen Elizabeth I of England. In 1809 Napoleon of France invaded Spain and put his brother on the Spanish throne. But the Spanish did not stand for this long and fought back for their independence. In 1931 a new government overthrew the King of Spain. Not everyone was happy with this arrangement and this led to the Spanish Civil War. From 1936-1975, Spanish general, Francisco Franco ruled Spain. This was a time of isolation and poverty for Spain
