Curonian spit
The Curonian spit is the national Park of Kaliningrad region, on the border to Lithuania.
It is a unique place, where the sand dunes are combined with pine forests and moss-covered meadows. the spit is considered to have been formed from several Islands tied by sand brought by the sea. Sand dunes of the Curonian spit are the highest in Russia. They often move from place to place. Local residents are protected from sand with pine trees planted here in the twentieth century. They have also become a peculiar attraction of the Park: the trees bent and writhing in a most peculiar way, thus this area was nicknamed "the Dancing forest". The layer of fertile soil that support the delicate balance of the spit, is very thin. So in certain places tourists are allowed to walk only on special paths.
